There are too many opportunities for mischief to resist: nab a cherry and you’ll get a random power-up, from one which rearranges the pictures on the card to another which triggers a rockfall on your hapless rival. You can, of course, command your Pikmin to attack the opposing captain to stall their progress while they shake them off, while an optional extra turns the game into the oddest capture the flag variant you’ve ever seen: capture the victory macaroon. With 12 unique stages and several enemies that don’t feature in story mode, it’s one of the most substantial and unusual multiplayer games Nintendo has produced.
